Australian internet usage statistics
people research businesses with the help of Google, Bing and Yahoo
Recent surveys conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics* show that each year in Australia, more and more people gain access to the internet. More and more people are using the internet to research businesses to determine whether or not to do business with them, whether or not to buy their products or utilise their services.
Results from The Australian Bureau of Statistics survey* shows:
Way back in 2007, 11.3 million Australians were accessing the internet. Imagine how many more are accessing the internet now!
64% of Australian households have home internet access and 73% of households have access to a computer.
From 1998 to 2006-07, households’ access to home internet in Australia has quadrupled
Of the estimated 11.3 million people who accessed the Internet from any location, four in five people belong to equivalised annual household income of at least $80,000 and less than $120,000
Of the estimated 11.3 million people who accessed the Internet from any location, 61% used the Internet to purchase or order goods or services for private purposes.
As with previous years, the percentage of households with home computer access continues to be higher for households with children under 15 years of age, households in the Australian Capital Territory, households in the highest income quintile and households in metropolitan areas and major cities of Australia.
In 2006-07, of the estimated 9.9 million people accessing the Internet from home, 68% reported personal or private purposes to be the main purpose of Internet access, followed by work related purpose (17%). A significantly higher proportion of income earners in the highest income quintile (26%) and people with higher levels of educational attainment (26% of people who held a bachelor degree or higher) reported work related purposes as the main purpose of Internet use at home.
In 2007-08, 67% of Australian households had home internet access and 75% of households had access to a computer. These percentages are up 3% from the previous year.
